"3G Patent Platform", by Makoto Kijima and Tsuyoshi Takeda, NTT DoCoMo Technical Journal, Vol. 5 No.1, June 2003, © NTT DoCoMo Inc. [with permission] The third-generation (3G) mobile communication system, referred to as International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) and developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), was commercially launched in Japan in May 2001, before any other country in the world. The standard specifications comprising IMT-2000 adopted technologies proposed by many organizations, many of which have been patented by companies that developed the constituent technologies. From a commercial point of view, studies have been conducted on licensing these patents efficiently. This article reviews the current state of the 3G Patent Platform, an organization to realize the comprehensive licensing of IMT-2000 patents. For full release, click here.
